Inspired by the process of photosynthesis, scientists from the University of Cambridge, UK, have created floating artificial leaves that produce clean fuel with the help of sunlight and water. These extremely thin, flexible devices were tested on River Cam, the main river that flows through Cambridge.

As these leaves are light enough to float on water, the fuel produced by them could be used as a sustainable substitute for petrol without occupying space on land. In the future, these inexpensive devices could be used on waterways, at sea and in ports, reducing the shipping industry’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Did You Know?
Approximately 80% of the trade that takes place globally is transported by cargo ships running on fossil fuels.
