Archaeologists discovered an ancient gate during excavations near Kiryat Gat’s industrial zone in Israel. Along with the gate, which archaeologists believe is the most ancient gate discovered in Israel, a part of a fortification system dating to the Early Bronze Age was also found. The gate protected the ancient city of Tel Erani, which is believed to have been a significant urban centre at the time. According to archaeologists, the mudbricks used to build the fortification system and gate had to be manufactured and the stones used in the construction had to be brought from a distance, which reflects the beginning of urbanisation in the region. This discovery will enhance archaeologists’ understanding of the area’s inhabitants and their attempts to construct urban centres.
