Sylvester daCunha, the man who designed the Indian dairy brand Amul’s iconic ‘Amul Girl’, passed away on June 20. daCunha was the managing director of an advertising agency named ASP when the Amul Girl ‘utterly butterly’ campaign went public in 1966. The Amul Girl, Amul’s mascot, which was conceptualised and created by daCunha along with ASP’s art director Eustace Fernandes, is a cartoon character with a polka-dotted dress, blue hair and rosy cheeks. The mascot initially appeared on a few billboards and was well-known for her one-liners based on contemporary events. She gradually became a popular household figure and an important part of the Amul brand. daCunha worked on Amul’s advertising for more than 60 years.
