Researchers found that being exposed to particulate matter (PM), even for a short period of time, can have several negative effects on humans, including decreased focus and an inability to carry out daily tasks. Such exposure can also negatively affect an individual’s memory, decision making and behaviour.
Researchers carried out an experiment that involved one group of people breathing in clean air and another group breathing in candle smoke. The study found that the people who took in candle smoke struggled to concentrate and showed a diminished capacity to perceive emotions.
Through this study, scientists underscored the impact of air pollution, demonstrating how it affects not only individuals, but also economies by lowering productivity.
