An international team of scientists led by Professor Carlos Frenk from the Institute for Computational Cosmology at Durham University, UK, has produced one of the most detailed three-dimensional maps of the universe. The map was produced after seven months of research using the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI).
DESI looks for dark energy using its fibre-optic system, which splits light from galaxies, stars and quasars. DESI helps to reveal the chemical make-up of these celestial bodies, how far away they are and how fast they are travelling, allowing researchers to create a map of how fast and how far the universe has expanded. DESI has also produced data that is related to 11 billion years ago, which will shed light on the early universe and the evolution of oxygen on Earth.
