INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, was commissioned into the Indian Navy by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a ceremony held at the Cochin Shipyard, Kerala, on September 2.
This warship is 262mts long and 62mts wide. It can accommodate 30 aircraft and 1,600 crewmembers on board.
The ship can reach a maximum speed of 28 knots and has an endurance of 7,500 nautical miles.
Designed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Cochin Shipyard Limited, Kerala, it is equipped with a kitchen, a medical unit with 16 beds, a radiology wing, an operation theatre, a dental unit and many other facilities.
This `20,000 crore warship will be the seventh largest aircraft carrier in the world when fully loaded, the largest being the US Navy’s USS Gerald R Ford Class (CVN-78).
