Scientists recently discovered the fossil of a new species of the giant sea lizard mosasaur in the Oulad Abdoun Basin of Morocco’s Khouribga Province. Named Thalassotitan atrox, this huge sea creature is believed to have lived during the Cretaceous period, which is around 66 million years ago. Scientists believe that these reptiles were dominant ocean predators and fed on various marine creatures including turtles and fish. They could reach lengths of 40ft and had enormous teeth and jaws similar to those of killer whales. The creatures are believed to be distantly related to present-day iguanas.
