A fine was imposed on a person who disturbed a polar bear that was sleeping in the Svalbard archipelago of Norway. The person, who was aboard a ship that was passing through a fjord in the region, blared the ship’s foghorn on purpose, disturbing the animal and causing it to move. According to the governor of Svalbard, the perpetrator was levied a fine of 50,000 Norwegian kroner, which was paid. The incident reflects Svalbard’s stringent environmental and wildlife laws that protect polar bears in their habitat.
