Providing a boost to conservation, the Natural History Museum (NHM) in Mizoram has been designated as a repository by the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
The museum has received this designation under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002. With this, it has become the 21st repository of its kind in India.
Designated repositories safeguard and store biological material that helps researchers study different animal and plant species, including new species.
According to officials, the NHM, which has been set up within Mizoram University, will play a vital role in the protection of the diverse flora and fauna of Northeast India. NHM is located in Aizawl, which is the capital of Mizoram.
