Odisha experienced a fascinating natural phenomenon with approximately seven lakh olive ridley sea turtles reaching the state’s coast for mass nesting in February. These creatures have shells that are olive green in colour and are popular for their mass nesting behaviour.
At the time of mass nesting, thousands of female turtles make their way to the shore to lay eggs. They create pits on the shore to lay their eggs, which hatch in about 50 days.
Odisha is a key region for this natural phenomenon, primarily occurring at the Devi River mouth, Rushikulya River mouth and Gahirmatha Beach. The entire process unfolds over approximately seven days.
Various steps, including setting up a protective fence, were taken by conservationists and government authorities to protect the nesting sites.
