The number of cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) began to increase in China towards the end of 2024. This virus impacts the respiratory system and can cause pneumonia in extreme situations.
The symptoms of the virus include a runny nose, body ache, fever, cough and breathlessness. It can pose a threat to the aged, infants and those with existing medical issues.
The virus spreads from person to person through close personal contact and via small droplets released into the air when an individual infected with HMPV sneezes or coughs.
There were cases of the disease reported in several states in India including Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
According to experts, the disease has been present among humans for several decades.
