Art Inspired by Piet Mondrian

Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter who was famous for his modern abstract style. His paintings used a simple combination of straight lines, right angles and primary colours along with black, white and grey to portray emotions.

In these paintings, you can choose any combination of primary colours and separate them with black lines. Also, the arrangement of shapes is your choice.

The colours Mondrian chose signify different emotions:

  • Red signifies anger and aggression
  • Yellow signifies sharp feelings
  • Blue signifies calm
  • Red placed next to yellow signifies annoyance

Here’s how you can create your own art inspired by Piet Mondrian on paper or canvas.

MATERIALS

  • Square or rectangle paper or canvas
  • Masking tape
  • Acrylic paints
  • Paintbrush
METHOD
  • On a canvas, stick the masking tape on 2 sides to make a square. Mark these as the border. Rub down the edges of the tape with your finger or a coin so the paint doesn’t seep under.
  • Make a few more columns using tape, including one over the border as shown.
  • Paint the spaces in between the masking tape black as shown. Use very little water and follow the edges of the tape with your brush.
  • Then pull the masking tape off and let the paint dry.
  • Now stick the tape horizontally. Don’t press too hard on the black lines as the paint can peel off. Press the tape down tightly on the white spaces. The width in between the tapes can differ.
  • Paint with black again. Press the brush lightly as the paint shouldn’t seep under. Then peel the tape off and wait for the paint to dry.
  • To fill in the white gaps, start with yellow. To get the edges absolutely straight, you can use tape again or paint freehand. The colour has to be flat.
  • Choose the arrangement of colours as per your preference. Add red and blue in spaces that will complement the yellow. Once you are done, peel off the border tape. Your artwork is ready.
