Madhav Gadgil, an experienced Indian ecologist, has been honoured with the Champions of the Earth award for his extensive work in the field of environmental conservation. The prestigious award, which is conferred by the United Nations (UN), honours the efforts of leading figures whose contributions have brought about remarkable environmental improvements. Gadgil, who has around 60 years of experience in the field, is well-known for his studies and conservation efforts of the Western Ghats. Gadgil’s work has encouraged the protection of ecosystems through community involvement and highlighted various risks threatening the Western Ghats. Gadgil has produced over 200 scientific papers during his career and his work has impacted policymaking.
