Nepal has begun exporting electricity to Bangladesh, highlighting a crucial milestone in boosting energy partnerships between countries to ensure the optimal use of resources.
Nepal, which possesses abundant hydropower, will supply power to Bangladesh, which is dealing with energy shortages.
The transfer of energy is being facilitated via the Indian electricity grid, indicating the commencement of a tripartite agreement for power sales between Bangladesh, Nepal and India. This initiative, the first of its kind in the South Asian region, became functional on November 15, 2024.
The agreement between Nepal Electricity Authority, Bangladesh Power Development Board and NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam was signed on October 3, 2024.
