Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been named the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) by President Droupadi Murmu. Khanna took charge as the CJI on November 11, succeeding former CJI DY Chandrachud in the post. He will hold this post until May 13, 2025. Khanna, whose legal career commenced in 1983, has issued judgments for several high-profile legal cases. He was appointed to the Supreme Court of India in 2019 after serving as a Delhi High Court judge for over a decade. With a career spanning 40 years, Khanna has experience in company law, arbitration, environmental law, constitutional law and a variety of other fields.
