Nasi Goreng 

Try this quick and easy Indonesian twist on fried rice.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups cooked rice 
  • 1 medium onion or spring onion, finely chopped 
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed or finely chopped 
  • 1 fresh red chilli 
  • 5 ½-inch tofu or chicken pieces 
  • 3 tablespoons soya sauce 
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar 
  • 1 teaspoon shrimp paste (optional) 
  • Salt and black pepper to taste 
  • 1 tablespoon oil 

METHOD

  • In a small pan, add the soya sauce and brown sugar, stir them together and turn the heat off when the sauce thickens. 
  • In a larger pan, heat the oil, add the onions and garlic and let them cook for a minute. 
  • Add the red chillies followed by the tofu or chicken. 
  • Add the prepared sweet soya sauce, some crushed black pepper and shrimp paste (optional) and stir well. 
  • Now add the rice and mix well. Place a lid and let it simmer for 2 to 3 minutes. 
  • Serve with a boiled or fried egg and some steamed broccoli. 

Note: You can add more vegetables of your choice like carrots, capsicum and others to this dish.
