Harini Amarasuriya, an academician and activist, has been appointed as Sri Lanka’s prime minister. Amarasuriya is the country’s 16th prime minister and third female prime minister after Sirimavo Bandaranaike and Chandrika Kumaratunga. 54-year-old Amarasuriya belongs to the National People’s Power Alliance. She began her career in politics on a full-time basis in 2021. In addition to her responsibilities as Sri Lanka’s prime minister, she is also in charge of various ministries including science and technology, education and justice. Amarasuriya completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Hindu College, Delhi.
