‘Virunga’ follows a heroic squad of park rangers as they strive to protect the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Virunga National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the world’s most biodiverse areas and is home to the last remaining mountain gorillas. It is also one of the most dangerous areas for conservation workers. Poachers, armed militia and enterprises exploiting the park’s natural riches all pose ongoing threats to the area and its residents. The good news is that gorilla populations have grown since 2014 and conservationists are working with communities to develop new businesses and alternatives to violence.
