China launched Mengxiang, the country’s first ocean drilling vessel, which is set to explore the Earth’s mantle and aid scientific research. The ship is approximately 590ft long and 108ft wide and has a cargo capacity of 33,000 tonnes. Built by China Geological Survey and over 100 other organisations, this enormous ship is capable of drilling 11,000mts below the surface of the sea. Mengxiang aims to penetrate the Earth’s crust and reach the Earth’s mantle, which has never been explored before. The vessel has been designed in a manner that enables it to withstand strong winds and function in any sea. Mengxiang employs the most advanced drilling system in the world and will provide scientists with insights on evolution and geology.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Earth’s mantle, which lies between the Earth’s surface and central core, accounts for approximately 84% of its volume.
