The first marine protected area for the endangered sperm whale species is being created by Dominica, a Caribbean country. The country has designated an area of approximately 800sq kms off its western coast as a reserve for sperm whales, one of the largest creatures on the planet. Sperm whales inhabit all the world’s oceans and are found in the waters of Dominica all year round. They often get entangled in fishing nets, collide with ships and consume toxic pollutants, which harm and kill them. The government of Dominica plans to prohibit commercial fishing and will only permit artisanal fishing in the protected area. Additionally, whale tourism and shipping operations will be strictly regulated in the reserve.
