Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, USA, have developed a device capable of converting hot summer air into drinking water. This innovative device utilises a special hydrogel that extracts moisture from the air and, with the assistance of sunlight, transforms it into potable water. Depending on local humidity levels, for every kilogram of gel material, this device can generate between 3.5 to 7kgs of water. Scientists are also trying to further enhance the efficiency of this technology in order to create cost-effective devices that can be used worldwide. This device has the potential to provide clean water to people struggling with water shortages.
