A pharmaceutical company called Toregem Biopharma, funded by Kyoto University, Japan, has created a drug that can grow new teeth. This drug will be the world’s first medicine that enables the growth of new teeth. Along with milk teeth and permanent teeth, animals and human beings possess tooth buds that can grow into new teeth. But these buds mostly fail to develop and finally die. A protein in the mouth called USAG-1 stops the development of these tooth buds. The newly developed drug inactivates this protein, thus enabling the growth of teeth. Scientists hope to use this drug to treat people with different dental problems including those who have lost teeth because of cavities.
