Letter from the Editor: May 01, 2021

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, the father of Prince Charles and the grandfather of Prince Harry and Prince William, passed away on April 9, 2021. His funeral was held on April 17 at the St George’s Chapel in Windsor, UK.

Prince Philip’s funeral service began with a national minute’s silence at 3pm. The event was televised so people could pay their final respects. Prince Harry, who has moved out of the royal household and given up all his royal duties, returned to the UK for the funeral of his grandfather.

Interestingly, he received no special treatment upon his entry into the UK. This means that like everyone else, Harry had to fall in line with standard COVID-19 protocols, including a mandatory period of quarantine. There are two ways of looking at this— should he have been given royal treatment during his time of loss or is it right for the royal family to strictly follow COVID-19 protocols? (After all, the virus makes no discrimination between rich and poor!) We think the latter is what is required.

Closer to home, despite the rising COVID-19 cases in India, the Mahakumbh Mela, which takes place every 12 years, saw lakhs of worshippers gather at Haridwar. People who came without masks and refused to follow social distancing rules were absolutely indifferent towards the pandemic. India is reporting almost 3 lakh new coronavirus cases a day. Shouldn’t the government and common citizens be doing their bit to break the chain of disease? What are your thoughts on this? Write to us at [email protected]
