According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), most parts of India will have experienced maximum temperatures that will be above normal from April to June this year.
In April, Mumbai recorded temperatures that were above 37˚C, which is 4˚C above normal, while temperatures in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana rose to above 40˚C.
Several eastern states including West Bengal, Odisha and Bihar experienced heatwave conditions in April.
11 people died due to heatstrokes while more than 600 people fell ill due to prolonged exposure to heat after attending the Maharashtra Bhushan Award Ceremony in Maharashtra’s Navi Mumbai on April 16.
To protect oneself from the heat, doctors recommend staying indoors, consuming water and healthy fluids, avoiding exhausting physical activities, wearing loose cotton clothes, wearing sunglasses and using an umbrella when heading out of the house.
