Kavach, India’s automatic train collision protection system that has been in development since 2012, is now in the trial stage. Kavach is a set of electronic and radio frequency identification devices that have been installed in locomotives, on tracks and in signalling systems. These devices communicate with each other using high radio frequencies. They will control the brakes of trains and make sure drivers are alert. The trial run of Kavach was inspected by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the union minister of railways, communications and electronics and information technology, on March 4. If it works, Kavach will be the cheapest automatic train collision prevention system in the world.
