Elephant Banned at Thrissur Pooram

News

On May 11, 2019, the district administration of Kerala banned the participation of the tallest elephant Thechikottukavu Ramachandran in Thrissur Pooram, a local festival in Kerala. This elephant opens the southern door of the temple where the festival is celebrated. The chief wildlife warden and the Thrissur police department decided against Thechikottukavu Ramachandran's participation because he is blind in the right eye and is easily provoked. The government has instead offered 80 elephants from Devaswom, a socio-religious trust in Kerala, for the festival this year. Over the years, 13 people and three elephants have died due to injuries caused by Thechikottukavu Ramachandran.
